Nothing can destroy the potential serenity of an evening quite like a child.

Last week, my daughter invited a few friends to celebrate her birthday with a movie at Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Before we could even lay down the blankets, the kids were off playing. I told them their pizza was going to get cold, but they didn’t care. There was too much too do.

So I told my husband, let’s take this opportunity to sit down, chill and enjoy our dinner. It was a beautiful night, we’re sitting near the lake, eating a nice meal and we could see the kids playing. What could go wrong?

When we looked up again, we couldn’t see Campbell, the birthday girl. We scanned the shore and then suddenly, from behind some vegetation, emerges my daughter, sprinting along the shore, dripping wet, holding a turtle above her head! Running behind her, there are no less than 20 little squealing kids.

It’s one of those sights that will be forever etched into my memory. I’m hoping this will be one of those moments where I’ll look back and laugh, after my blood pressure returns to normal.
