LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Lumberton doctor who said he joked about closing his eyes during a procedure voluntarily surrendered his medical license.

Dr. Santhosh Augustine, a gastroenterologist, gave his license to the North Carolina Medical Board on July 27, officials said. He resigned from Southeastern Regional Medical Center three days earlier, hospital officials said.

Augustine said he and two nurses joked about being blindfolded while doing an endoscopy on March 20. Augustine said he could see throughout the procedure, even when a nurse briefly placed her hands over his eyes.

Augustine also owns a practice, Southeastern Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, in Lumberton. He served with the hospital for 11 years.
