Lucy Daniels Center expands to offer services for grade schoolers

The Lucy Daniels Center, a wonderful resource for parents of young kids with mental health issues, is expanding to offer programs for first and second graders starting in the next school year. And by the 2015-16 school year, the center will enroll kids through fifth grade.

The expanded program, which will be called the Lucy Daniels School, eventually will serve kids ages 3 to 11 in a classroom setting that provides specialized child mental health services, according to the center's announcement.

"For 22 years we have provided a therapeutic school setting for preschool- and kindergarten-aged children," says Dr. Donald Rosenblitt, the center's executive and clinical director, said in the announcement. "Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, we will be able to meet the needs of these children in their elementary school years, providing a challenging and vibrant educational experience as well as a level of sophisticated and flexible emotional and special educational support."

The new combination first and second grade class will enroll no more than 10 students, who will be led by a masters-level teacher. Child mental health experts in the center's Family Guidance Service will provide students with an individualized therapeutic program, if needed, the announcement says. Parents also will get support.

The school will hold an open house at the center at 9003 Weston Parkway in Cary from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Feb. 20. Parents, early childhood and elementary educators, pediatric and mental health professionals and others, are welcome to learn more about the new program. Wow alex, just goes to show you they're in it for the money. Glad you posted. Their website won't say where they get their money, but they do say they're the largest MH Childrens resource in the State.

I thought this would be a great place to help my son, but unfortunately found them not value their consumer. They charge you $50 for cancelling an appointment within less than 24 hours....they preach this and require you to sign paperwork to acknowledge your understanding of this. For our second appointment, I was called 5 minutes prior to the appointment as I pulled into the parking lot to be told they inadvertantly doublebooked and they had to cancel. I later request a minumum of a $50 credit on my account, just as they would have required of me. I explained that my husband and I each left work more than 2 hours early and pulled my son out of scholl 1.5 hours early and drove a half hour to get there. I was told that the director said "It is not something that he allows here because he sees that though inconvenient, sees these as scheudling errors that can be rescheduled and that a business relationship is not reciprocal always in the way that relationships are." Very unfortunate.
