Heavy rain falls east of Triangle

"We are not anticipating a severe storm outbreak, but we cannot rule out an isolated strong to severe storm with gusty winds and some small hail," said WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson.

Late afternoon showers drenched some parts of Nash and Edgecombe counties, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flash Flood Warning through 6:45 p.m.

Once the cold front moves through the region overnight, cooler temperatures and low humidity will take over to create a gorgeous holiday weekend. 

Highs Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid-70s, and overnight lows during the weekend will dip into the mid-40s, weather almost perfect for the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and other holiday weekend events. 

"You may not feel a big difference when you wake up Friday, but you will notice that it just doesn't warm up much during the day," Gardner said. "It will be breezy and we'll see much cooler highs as we head into the weekend."

Memorial Day highs will climb back into the low 80s.
