HENDERSON, N.C. — A Louisburg man called for help Saturday night as he swam in Kerr Lake, but he drowned before anyone was able to get to him, a spokesman with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation said Monday.

Demetrius Cannady, 27, was in the designated swimming area at Satterwhite Point when he got in trouble around 7 p.m., according to parks spokesman Charlie Peek.

Cannady called out, then disappeared under the water, Peek said. Other swimmers found him minutes later, and he was taken to Duke University Hospital where he died early Sunday, Peek said.
