Louisburg High student killed in crash

Thomas Cody Klingensmith was reported as a runaway, and his parents found his car with his body inside crashed and burned on Ronald Therington Road in Franklin County, the sheriff's office said.

LOUISBURG, N.C. — A senior at Louisburg High School died early Monday in a single-car crash.

Thomas Cody Klingensmith was reported as a runaway, and his parents found his car with his body inside crashed and burned on Ronald Therington Road in Franklin County, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff' said it appears Klingensmith lost control and ran off the road into a patch of kudzu.

The state Highway Patrol was investigating the cause of the crash, and the school provided crisis counselors to students who knew Klingensmith. 

Deputies found a handgun in the car, and they sent it to the State Bureau of Investigation to determine if it had been fired.
