The Carolina Ballet's Nutcracker opens this weekend, but there is more than one place to see the holiday classic across the Triangle.
Here's where to find it:
Carolina Ballet opens its production Friday at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. The show runs there from Friday to Sunday and then from Dec. 14 to Dec. 23. Find it at UNC Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill from Dec. 1 to Dec. 2. And it's at the Durham Performing Arts Center from Dec. 28 to Dec. 30. This year's show, like last year's show, features some magical moments, which I wrote about quite a bit last year. The tricks, which happen in the first act during the party scene, fit pretty seamlessly into the story. Tickets start at around $25 each (plus fees) and go way up.
The City Ballet will present its 20th annual performance of The Nutcracker, featuring guests artists from the Carolina Ballet, at 7 p.m., Dec. 7, and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Dec. 8. Tickets start at $10. The performances are at N.C. State University's Stewart Theatre.
The Triangle Youth Ballet will present The Nutcracker for the 18th season at 7 p.m., Dec. 1, and 2 p.m., Dec. 2, at the Robert C. Haines Theater at Chapel Hill High School. It moves over to the Carolina Theatre in Durham with shows at 7 p.m., Dec. 15, and 2 p.m., Dec. 16. Tickets are $10 to $23.
The Cary Ballet Company will present the classic at 7 p.m., Dec. 14; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Dec. 15; and 2 p.m., Dec. 16, at the Cary Arts Center in downtown Cary as part of its "A Very Cary Christmas" show. The performance also includes a piece featuring The 3D Project Dancers, a jazz company, who will premiere "All Wrapped Up," which includes favorite holiday songs and a visit from Santa. Tickets are $12 for kids ages 2 to 12, students ages 12 to 17 and seniors and $15 for adults.
And Destiny Dance Institute will perform "A Christmas Gala" at Heritage High School in Wake Forest. It includes a modified version of The Nutcracker, along with performances from the studio's jazz, tap and hip hop companies. Shows are 3 p.m . and 7 p.m., Dec. 9. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door. Call 919-453-1453 for details.
