These events, which are typically held twice a year across Raleigh, Cary and Durham, feature all kinds of clothes, toys and gear for kids - from babies to teens. They often are run by local moms and church groups. In many cases, the money raised supports local charities and other programs.

At Triangle consignment sales, you'll find fantastic bargains on everything you need to fill out your kids' wardrobes and playrooms - from bathing suits and Easter dresses to bikes and baby toys.

They also offer a great way to clean out your closet. Consignors earn a percentage of their sales - usually between 60 percent and 70 percent - and also get the opportunity to shop before the public so they can nab the best deals.

I'm a long-time consignment sale shopper and, over the years, have gotten a great deals - from a $4 Easter dress that both of my girls were able to wear to $8 snowsuits and $5 winter boots.

Now that my girls are older, they actually earn their own money by selling toys, books and games that they no longer want at a sale that I've shopped since they were babies.

If you're a newcomer to consignment sales, some tips before you go:

  • Know what you need. Come prepared with a list of items - rain boots and bathing suits, for instance - and sizes.
  • Bring your own bags ... or wagons. You won't usually find shopping carts at these sales, but you may need one to haul around all of your loot. Bring a giant bag, wagon or stroller (without a kid sitting in it) to push your finds around.
  • Shop early by signing up to either consign or volunteer. Again, shopping early is the best way to get the very best deals. Volunteering to set up a sale also can be fun and a great way to get out and meet some new people.
  • Make it a girls' night. In other words, leave the kids at home, if you can. That way you can focus on what you need to get and won't have to deal with kids grabbing every toy in sight.
