RALEIGH, N.C. — Wednesday may be the second day of spring, but Triangle residents could see a reminder of winter. Light snow is in the forecast for the morning.

A low pressure system moving in from the west will force temperatures down through the night and into Wednesday. They will bottom out at about 35 degrees in Raleigh, meaning that falling precipitation could turn briefly to snow.

Raleigh and points south should not expect to see snow accumulate, WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said.

"This will be a trace, maybe a dusting for the Triangle, with maybe up to an inch along the Virginia state line," she said.

The changeover happens right around dawn, Wilmoth said.

7-Day Forecast

"A complex pattern with surface low pressure to our east and an upper level trough swinging in from the west will bring a chance of wintry precipitation that could start early in the morning northwest of the Triangle and before or around daybreak for the Triangle area, spreading east from there and tapering off later in the morning to around midday," Wilmoth said.

The mountains of North Carolina could see higher totals, with some communities measuring up to 5 inches of snow by the time the system has passed.

Temperatures will rise through the day Wednesday, but the precipitation sticks around.

After that, the weather moderates. Thursday and Friday are mostly clear with temperatures in the mid-50s.
