Longtime lawmaker Daughtry won't seek re-election
Rep. Leo Daughtry, R-Johnston, said Tuesday that he won't run for re-election next year, ending his 28-year tenure in the General Assembly.

"I am profoundly grateful to the people of Johnston County for allowing me to serve them since 1989," Daughtry said in a statement. "I am also grateful to the members of the General Assembly on both sides of the aisle for their friendship over the years."
He was elected to the Senate in 1989 and four years later moved to the House, where he has spent 12 terms.
Daughtry is the second most senior member of the House and serves as chairman of the House Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety Committee and the House Judiciary I Committee. He has previously served as both majority and minority leader.
He becomes the third Republican House member to bow out after the 2016 legislative session. Rep. Paul Stam, R-Wake, announced last month that he wouldn't seek re-election, and Rep. Jacqueline Schaffer, R-Mecklenburg, followed suit last week.
Daughtry plans to continue practicing law in Johnston County.
