Long-serving State Fair policeman dies

— Lt. John Jernigan, 77, of the North Carolina State Fair Police died Thursday, a spokesman with the state Department of Agriculture said.

Jernigan was in the hospital recovering from back surgery when he suffered a heart attack. He had served the State Fair for 55 years.

    From what it sounds like, this man just could not retire. I admire and respect someone who would be willing to work for so long doing a job that is so dangerous. Good work officer, and godspeed.

    John, U always did a great job and service at the State Fair. U will be missed. John always made sure that our NC State Fair was safe. I hope with all the things that are going on these days that our fair will still be a very safe place for family and friends to enjoy GOOD OLE AMERICAN FUN. Times have changed and people seem to search for a way to spoil the fun.
