Locals respond to people and animals affected by Hurricane Harvey flooding

The Henderson County Technical Rescue Team sent an 18-person crew over to perform swiftwater rescues, a Transylvania County EMS worker was there with some firefighters from the Asheville fire department--and Brother Wolf says on its Facebook page that workers are there to help save animals from the floodwaters.

At the American Red Cross Chapter in Asheville we talked to one team heading to Houston as an ERV (emergency response vehicle).

We caught up with Red Cross volunteer Dee Besecker, who loaded up her ERV last Sunday, and talked to her husband on Labor Day.

He says although she left more than a week ago because the roads are flooded, it took her days to get into Houston. He says Dee said she was just starting to hand out meals on Monday.

And although he's concerned for her, he says he's proud of what she's doing.

"It's kind of stressful," Chuck Besecker said. "You don't know what they're getting into. You just hope they stay safe. And it's a long drive."

We've also talked to the Red Cross about their efforts. Last time we spoke with them, they said they really need three things right now: money, volunteers to work here in North Carolina since some of their volunteers are responding in Texas, and they always need blood.
