There are a lot of reasons behind delays at the post office this year, from post office workers in quarantine to limits on overtime for postal service staff to fewer sorting machines.
However, one longtime local United States Postal Service manager has another theory: the huge amount of stuff being shipped.

“No one has experienced anything like this, so it’s hard to even fathom that we’re going through this,” he said.

The manager, who reached out to WRAL News anonymously, said that the amount of items being shipped is 30% more than it has ever been before.

Items that came in as early as December 4 have still not made it to their destination. He believes that many gifts will not arrive at their destination by Christmas.

"Most everybody can take — and should be able to take — the post office for granted,” he said. “But I do believe that for the first time in my career, that’s not been the case."

The wait appears to be in every aspect of USPS’ process. For example, the manager said, incoming mail trucks from local post offices to sorting facilities have been waiting as long as six hours just to get unloaded.

"Being honest, I don’t know if we’re going to get it there by the holidays,” he said. “But we are absolutely trying.”

“And it hurts. Everybody within this company never ever wants to see this happen."
