Local law enforcement agencies hosting medicine drop

During Operation Medicine Drop, the public can voluntarily anonymously turn in any medications (with the exception of syringes and needles) at a number of locations around Wake County Saturday, no questions asked.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said he hopes the event will reduce the amount of controlled pharmaceuticals that could be diverted to an escalating illicit market.

The sheriff’s office also says that children are vulnerable to unintentional poisoning deaths and injuries because of expired medicines with the most common culprits being access to over-the-counter medications and prescription medications.

“We hope Operation Medicine Drop will educate the public on the dangers of pharmaceutical drug abuse, accidental poisonings, as well as the responsible handling, security, and destruction of their prescription medications,” Harrison said.

In addition to the Wake County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and police departments from Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Morrisville, Rolesville, Wendell, Zebulon and Wake Medical Center are also participating in the event.
