Local Christmas tree farms let customers cut their own

Yesterday, Suzanne Brown with the state's tourism division, recommended a variety of pick-your-own Christmas tree packages at farms and hotels in the North Carolina mountains.

But if you want to stay closer to home, eastern North Carolina has some choose-and-cut experiences as well that make a great day trip or test drive to see if you want to head out to the mountains next year.

Brown recommended a few and I'll add some others. Some farms are open now, others will open the week of Thanksgiving. As always, call ahead to make sure it's open and trees are available.

Here are Christmas tree farms closer to home:

North Lake Christmas Trees & Nursery, Benson

Boyce Farms, Raleigh

Jordan Lake Christmas Tree Farm, Apex, in Chatham County

Back Achers Christmas Tree Farm, Raleigh

Mistletoe Meadows, Garner. The farm is in the mountains, but they do have a pick and cut option in Garner. They have hay rides and refreshments on the weekends.

Daniel Christmas Tree Farm, Dunn

Christmas Tree Patch, Sanford

Griffin's Evergreens, 1823 Broadway Rd., Sanford. The farm opens at 2 p.m., Thanksgiving, and is open from 8 to 7 p.m., Saturdays and the Friday after Thanksgiving. Hours are 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and Sundays through Dec. 24 (or whenever they sell out). 919-258-3587

Corn Hill Farms, Kittrell (about nine miles south of Oxford).

Does anyone know if Christmas trees are less expensive at these farms or when you buy them from the lots around town?

If you guys want to go to the mountains to choose and cut a christmas tree. Alleghany county has plenty of farms up there. Everytime I go the people are very nice and helpful with choosing. Plus there are some good places to eat up there. Not to mention its right by the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Or, if you decide to go to the NC mountains, you can purchase a 7-9 ft. Christmas tree for $20 between 11/22 and 12/2. The sale will take place at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church parking lot and is a benefit to rebuild the North Beaver Creek Baptist Church. Call 336-877-9123 for more info.
