DURHAM, N.C. — Elisabeth Chadbourne turned a decade-old hobby into a growing small Durham-based business. Determined to create a natural apothecary, she launched Lo & Behold Natural Body Care.

“A lot of brands claim they are natural, but they really are not," she said. "The more I was making skin care for myself as a hobby, the more I wondered why there weren’t more effective, natural products on the market."

Chadbourne is dedicated to working with local businesses to support her company and the community.

On weekends, she can be found at pop-up events or local farmers’ markets, where she demos her products and teaches workshops.

The Lo & Behold brand is handmade in small batches by Chadbourne and a few volunteers. The line-up includes body care, facial care and bug spray.

Chadbourne uses high quality, natural ingredients sourced from local farmers. All products are paraben-free, cruelty-free and gluten-free. She also offers some vegan selections.

Many Lo & Behold products are multi-purpose. Chadbourne says a lot of her customers use the body butters as facial moisturizers and hair styling products.

A holiday collection is available for a limited time, which includes a Gingerbread Body Scrub, an Orange and Clove Hand Salve and a Peppermint Lip Balm.

“A little goes a long way,” says Chadbourne. “You’re so used to products with so many fillers that they're mostly water and alcohol. Lo & Behold products are the opposite. None of our products are water-based, so you don’t need as much product to get the job done.”

Chadbourne frequently hosts workshops. To stay up to date on upcoming events, check out the Lo & Behold Facebook page or website.
The products can be purchased both online and in over twenty stores throughout North Carolina. A full list of vendors that stock Lo & Behold can be found online.
