Tropical Storm Bonnie to bring rain, thunder storms to Triangle
Mostly sunny skies on Saturday will give way overnight to clouds and possible storms ahead of Tropical Storm Bonnie moving up off the coast of South Carolina.
Posted — UpdatedA tropical depression off the southeast coast strengthened into Tropical Storm Bonnie Saturday around 4:30 p.m. with sustained winds at 45 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The tropical storm will directly affect weather in the Triangle through the holiday weekend, according to WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth.
“If this was to strengthen any more, I’d expect that to happen within the next couple of hours,” Wilmoth said. “Don’t think it’ll become a hurricane, it’s going to stay a tropical storm.”
Wilmoth said spotty showers are possible overnight but a higher percentage of rain will be present in the area around 8 a.m.
"These are going to be hit and miss showers basically all day tomorrow and into the Memorial Day holiday as well," she said.
“We’ll keep showers and thunderstorms in the forecast on and off throughout the entire day tomorrow [Sunday],” Wilmoth said. “A bit of a messy day, otherwise very cloudy.”
Rain and spotty thunderstorms will continue on Monday for Memorial Day, and the chance of showers continues into Tuesday and Wednesday depending on the path of the storm.
"We'll continue to have the potential for rain with Tropical Storm Bonnie for at least the next two days, possibly even longer," Wilmoth said. "
