LILLINGTON, N.C. — Town officials urged Lillington residents on Thursday to boil water used for drinking, cooking or cleaning until Friday morning because of problems in the local water system.

Two ruptures occurred in large water lines below East McNeill Street between 4 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, and flow from the town’s water tank had to be reduced to make necessary repairs, officials said.

The breaks were repaired and water service was restored by 8:40 p.m., but reduced water pressure could have allowed bacteria to enter the water lines.
