Hometown Hello: Beastly names

Banner Elk

The Banner family settled this town on the Elk River. The northeastern Avery County town is home to Lees-McRae College.

Bear Creek

This southwestern Chatham County town is home to the Southern Supreme fruitcake factory and Chatham Central High School. It was first called Richmond but renamed for a nearby creek.

Tiger

This northwestern Rutherford County town lies along Buffalo Creek, near Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton's home.

Buffalo Cove

A buffalo slaughter gave this northern Caldwell County town its name. It is near Chestnut Mountain, due north of Lenoir.

Alligator Township

This sparsely populated town is near the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. The town is off U.S. Highway 64 in northeastern Tyrrell County.
