Hometown Hello: Interesting nicknames

Boone

This eclectic college town is also known as the Firefly Capital of the World. It boasts about 20 species of the luminescent insects. It has a quaint downtown and a population of 17,122.

Brevard

This mountain town prides itself as the Home of the White Squirrels. The squirrels came off a carnival truck and are of an unusual variety, not albino squirrels. Each year, the town throws a festival in their honor.

Calabash

This southwest Brunswick County town of 711 people calls itself the Seafood Capital of the World and boasts its own cooking style. To cook Calabash style, means a dish is fired using corn meal. The word "Calabash" literally means "gourd."

Chadbourn

The North Carolina Strawberry Festival takes place in this Strawberry of the World. The Columbus County town was once called the Sunny South Colony and has population of 2,125.

Carrboro

This Orange County town is known as the Paris of the Piedmont, a nicknamed coined by a local reporter. It's also sometimes called the Invisible University. The town has a population of 19,582, and its nearest neighbor is Chapel Hill.
