Historic Battlefields

What is the most impressive battlefield you have visited?  What did researchers do there to really make history come alive?   Please share your thoughts.

I don’t know that I have ever visited a battlefield more moving than Culloden in Scotland. The National Trust of Scotland has done an amazing job of engaging tourists at its impressive visitor’s center near Inverness. The Battle of Culloden occurred in 1745. Highland clansmen led by Bonnie Prince Charlie were crushed here by British forces in a quick and decisive battle.

A brief 360 degree film played at the visitor’s center portrays the horrors of this battle. It’s called a battle immersion film and the re-enactment is powerfully crafted. In addition to impressive artifacts the center offers a giant battlefield board that shows how the Highlanders became bogged down in the moor in their push toward the front line of the British. The battlefield itself has been meticulously restored. You can almost hear the moans of the wounded and smell the blood poured on that cold and rainy April day. You can also view the battlefield from the roof of the visitor’s center for a unique perspective. You can also listen to the accounts of authentic characters in the Battle of Culloden.

If you’re ever in Scotland I would highly recommend a visit to Culloden.

I was impressed by Manassas in Virginia. In spite of the tremendous development in the area, they did a really good job of showing the scope of the battle and how both armies used the contours of the landscape during the course of the battle.

I've read that the best way to experience the battlefield at Shilow is to start at dawn on April 6 where the attack began and to follow it as the day progresses.
