NC's Official State Dessert

Posted March 3, 2011

The states of Maine and Pennsylvania are feuding over who invented the Whoopie Pie. Maine may even make the chocolate and cream sandwich its Official State Treat. Folks in Pennsylvania claim the Whoopie Pie originated in the Amish culture of the Keystone State.

What should North Carolina claim as its official state dessert? Please share your recommendations. We will send them on to the North Carolina General Assembly for consideration.

I would think sweet potato pie certainly deserves some attention. North Carolina is the top sweet potato producer in the country.

My personal favorite is pecan pie. North Carolina is also a major pecan producer.

What about peach cobbler? Banana pudding?  What else would qualify?

I vote for Apple Pie as our western part of the state is famous for Apples. Boy do I miss getting apple cider from NC state.
    Yum Yum
Bananas are not grown in NC so that should not be counted.

I'm not from NC, but looking in from an outsiders view if something like banana pudding goes way back in your history then I would consider it for a state dessert. I would probably stay away from peaches or you may have Georgia after you. You want to stay away from anything that might tread on others toes. Or you may be in a predictement like my state and the whoopie pie http://pa-dutch-travel.blogspot.com/2011/03/whoopie-pie-war-wages-on.html
Unless of course you have done your research thouroughly and know Georgia wont mind. But like you said you are a large producer of sweet potatoes and you probably have sweet potato festivals and the sorts, right? Good luck NC!

My vote would be for Sweet Potato Pie. Something grown here in North Carolina. Don't think you'll find a Bannana hanging from a tree in North Carolina to start with. If you think about it, the majority of our Official State items are, The State Flower is the Dogwood (grows here),the State Bird the Cardinal,(seen here), The State Tree, the Longleaf Pine which is grows here, so why not a dessert with an item that is popular to North Carolina. But who's to say, the Blackberry, Peach, Blueberry, Strawberry, or Pecan, would be a good choice too.

I just wish we grew bananas in NC.

Banana pudding is hard to beat (my mother is also 86 and still makes her own custard and meringue), but something I haven't had in years is persimmon pudding. Sure would love to have some now!

    Definitely Banana Pudding!

There's a little known State Law that says you MUST offer naner puddin' if you serve Barbeque (Eastern or Lexington style). That being said, the best dessert ever was my Grandmothers Tater Pie. My sisters comes in a close second (she grinds pecans and puts them in the crust).

    Now I'm hungry!

Looks like banana pudding is number one, but I prefer peach cobbler.
