Best places to retire

Posted March 2, 2011

If you were picking the perfect place to retire in North Carolina where would it be?

You might use Asheville for its cool mountain air, rich arts and cultural life and excellent restaurants.

You might prefer the Sandhills for the golf, tennis and towering pines.

The Triangle might please you with its outstanding health care, performing arts, and educational opportunities.

Or you could head to the coast  for the warm sunshine, sandy beaches and laid back lifestyle.

Where would you like to retire? Please explain.

We found it, Bill. At first we moved to Wisconsin to be near our kids. Then we came back to NC and found a wonderful home in Abingdon Glen Village, Hickory, NC. We have neighbors who have two homes. Some go to Boone. Some go to Myrtle Beech and two go to Florida. We are happy with one.

I would have two retirement homes.....one somewhere in the NC mountains, and the other in Myrtle Beach...the best of both worlds!

The mountains. First I thought somewhere around King, now I'm thinking somewhere around Hendersonville. No telling at this point.

Here in cary would be fine for me. Without a mortgage, I could be that crazy cat lady down the street. Having moved many times in childhood and adulthood, this is home to me. I've lived here for 21 years, and it just feels good.

I love the beach! That would be my first choice and I agree with other posters about how wonderful Southport is. But let's face it, when we retire, healthcare is a huge priority, and the Triangle has the best.

Beach, Beach, Beach!!! Feet in the sand and listening to the roar of the ocean 24/7/365!!!! Don't care where or which one!!!

I would like to retire and live on a cruise ship... That way when I die they could throw me in the water because I love it so much.. lol

Outer Banks, most likely. I grew up in the Piedmont and would appreciate the remoteness and solitude of the Outer Banks.

Bill, I wouldn't in a Carolina minute tell you where I would retire because everyone else would want to retire there too.
