Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

Tar Heel Cinema

Posted February 25, 2011

With the Academy Awards coming up this weekend I thought it would be fun to reflect on movies with a North Carolina connection. What is your favorite film shot in North Carolina or relating to our state?

Cold Mountain in 2003 had seven Academy Award nominations. Even though it was filmed mostly in Romania the story was based primarily in North Carolina. That year Renee Zellweger won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The Last of the Mohicans had a 1992 Academy Awards nomination for Best Sound and it won for that category. Much of that film was shot in Western North Carolina.  It's long been one of my favorites.

What are some of your NC cinematic favorites.

Does anyone remember the movie Brainstorm? Some of it was filmed at what was then the Burroughs Wellcome building. It was Natalie Wood's last film -- she died before the film was completed. That was one of the first major movies produced in North Carolina. It dates back to around 1981.

Not that these were faves but "The Rage: Carrie 2" was filmed in Dallas, NC and Charlotte. Then I also recall parts of "Love Field" starring Michelle Pfeiffer being filmed in Rocky Mount and Wilson.
