Early Spring Getaway

Posted February 16, 2011

Where would you go for an early spring getaway? Please share your destination recommendations for what should be a delightful weekend coming up.

I polled the WRAL Morning News Team. Elizabeth Gardner suggests a getaway to either Pinehurst, Hot Springs or Yadkin Valley wineries. Elizabeth says we should resist the temptation to expect too much warmth out of the coast this time of year.  You could try a spot slightly inland for a nice sojourn.  Kelcey Carlson says she would head to Wilmington. There's a lot to do and great seafood in the Port City. Kelcey and family would do the Cape Fear River walk and maybe a carriage ride.

Brian Shrader recommends a train trip to Charlotte and some great Southern cooking at Dish, a popular Queen City restaurant.

My recommendation is pottery country - a jaunt from Jugtown to Seagrove. If I were going out of state I'd probably go with Charleston for some low country cuisine.

How about you?

Well Ocracoke, of course...or any stretch of sand from Rodanthe south to OI. Arrrgghh!

I think gccmp is correct about Raleigh - Charlotte Amtrak service being disrupted currently....think I saw a report on that on WRAL in the last week. :-) Sounded like track repairs for the next 8 weeks or something like that.

I'm with you Bill on Seagrove, and I believe this weekend is Winterfest

Just spent a week at Myrtle Beach and am headed to Colonial Williamsburg in a few weeks. Williamsburg is great any time of year.

Brian's idea of a train trip to Charlotte would be wonderful but I think the Amtrak is out of service for now. If you have young children though, riding the Amtrak is a lot of fun and not that expensive. Much more fun and exciting than riding in a car and they can get up and move around.

The beach is the place to be no matter what the weather. Was just there a couple of weekends ago.

I'm headed to New Orleans in the morning for one of the first Mardi Gras parades. Krewe Du Vieux! The 70 degree weather is a wonderful break from the cold, and the party atmosphere is great to shake off the winter blues!

I'm with Kelcey! Wilmington is always a great destination. Also, while down there, it's fun to ride the ferry from Fort Fisher to Southport. Lots to see and do and good restaurants in Southport, too!
