Walking Rufus

Posted September 27, 2010

What was or is your favorite pet? What makes that pet so special? Please discuss.

My new CD Simple Beauty begins with a song called Walking Rufus. I hope you enjoy this multimedia musical featuring images of my dog.

Rufus Report - Week 3 Walking Rufus

Rufus came out for the official release of the CD last Friday at "dog friendly" Quail Ridge Books and Music in Raleigh. Rufus was clearly the star of the show.

I've never loved a pet more than Rufus – not even my childhood dogs – Pat, Puddin' and Sputnik. Not even 1980's radio star Barney of Mix 101.5 fame or adorable but temperamental Sparky. I loved them all but Rufus takes the top bone.

Rufus is 100% love. This Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix is exuberant, loyal, sweet, goofy, cuddly, cute, curious, attentive and slightly mischievous. Rufus may be the most loving and energetic creature I know. I love him dearly.

One simple beauty in my life over the last year has been taking Rufus on long walks. In fact, the melody for the song Walking Rufus came to me during one of these walks. It's funny. I wasn't sure the song was good enough to go on the album but the guys in Durham who mixed the album said Walking Rufus was their favorite tune on the CD.

I hope you enjoy this little movie about Rufus.

Rufus and I would both like to thank you for your kind words! We had fun putting this together!

Bill – what a beautiful song and such an adorable little guy for sure. We too are animal lovers – we now have 4 cats and 1 beautiful little dog. Last year our beloved 11 years old dog passed away very suddenly and I waited about 1 month before my search for a new rescue. The very first picture I saw was of this beautiful little 8 year old Yorkie that had been rescued from that awful puppy mill last year. Holly had spent 8 years in a tiny little cage. She is now 9 ½ and the joy of our lives – not sure who loves who more – her loving us or us loving her!!

Fabulous, what a great piece an such a cute member of the family. I know that you are the great pack member that Rufus believes you are. Thanks for sharing with us.

Our kids are grown and gone and I had said for a while that I didn't want anymore pets after the one's we have are gone. Then in July our last cat and my wife's "baby" took a turn for the worst. Three days before he passed, we got the first of two new kittens that had been rescued. My wife calls the youngest one her "angel kitty" because he came to help mend her broken heart. We've had new pets in the last 15 years, but it's been that long since we had a kitten or a puppy and you forget just how much laughter and life they bring. Which one is the favorite? That's like someone asking which child you love the most? You love them all the same, just for different reasons.

Bill - Thank you very much for sharing. Although I guess there are probably copyright issues, it would be great to get a copy of your slide show and music. I have had numerous dogs that I have loved dearly, but, if pressed, I would guess that Pippen would be the top dog that I have had. He literally walked into our lives (and hearts) during that 2-foot snow we had in 2000. He just had such an amazing personality - yes, "had" since we lost him this past year. We have since rescued a couple more who have become special in their own way, but Pippen is still sorely missed.

How could you not love that adorable little face? Bill, he is beautiful. Love that music too. I have had so many wonderful pets over the years, I can't name just one. They are such a huge part of our lives.

We have had our Airedale/retriever mix dog for 10 years. Her name is Gabby and she has grown up with our kids. What is so amazing is how protective this mild mannered dog became while my husband was deployed. It was like she knew my husband was gone and she was the protector of the house. When he returned she relaxed once again. Such a great member of the family, we love her.

One more story from our canine family...a few years ago, Tinkerbell (golden retriever)was about 6 months old and full of herself, bouncing around just being a puppy, I had a kidney stone attack one evening. I was sitting on the couch in tears from the sheer agony of pain and she came and curled up right beside me, not moving a muscle as she normally would had. I think she sensed something was wrong and was trying to comfort me, even at that young age. Don't tell me dogs aren't smart!!

My favorite pet was my first pet. His name was Harley and he was a black lab mix. He was 3 months old when we got him and he was perfect...except he ended up with Parvo. He survived, after a long battle and lots of time in the doggie ICU at a Phoenix vet hospital and lots of love by me and my husband. Then, just after his 3rd birthday, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. NCSU Vet hospital did everything they could for him, but on May 8th, 2009 we said our goodbye's and let him go. I miss him dearly, but I know he is out of pain and loving his life in heaven.

Wonderful song - it is obvious that it was inspired by that sweet Rufus! Delightful, light and full of spirit and love!
