Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

N.C.'s best dessert

Posted August 30, 2010

What is North Carolina's best restaurant dessert? Let's crown a winner and put a cherry on top.

I don't often eat dessert when dining out. But when I go to The Angus Barn on a special occasion I cannot resist Van Eure's chocolate chess pie. I would rank this award-winning recipe as my all-time favorite restaurant dessert.

Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill has a seasonal favorite in honeysuckle sorbet. However, there is usually no more than a three-week window to enjoy that tasty treat

Irregardless in Raleigh used to serve up the best French silk pie I can recall.

What is your favorite restaurant dessert?

Hayes Barton Cafe in Raleigh's Five Points has some of the best cake I have ever put in my mouth. Each slice is $8 but WELL worth every bite!! I can't pick a favorite. Go check it out for yourself!

Bananas Foster at Winston's. Absolutely marvelous and enough for two!

The Banana Brioche at 518 West in Glenwood South, if you even remotely like bananas & cinnamon (and I'm not a huge fan of either ordinarily). It's truly exquisite. Or sometimes their seasonal sorbets with homemade almond cookie, depending.

Twisted Fork's signature Tia Maria Cake which isn't cake at all....layers of chocolate chip cookies soaked with coffee liqueur with mocha whipped cream between the layers, topped off with mocha buttercream icing....excuse me, I have to, um, run an errand real quick now...

While I'm thinking of the AB, Mrs. Betty (my mother-in-law) makes a brown sugar cake that is, as they say, to die for.

Love The Barn's chocolate chess pie but their sawdust pie with some vanilla ice cream is my favorite.

The Channel Marker Restaurant in Atlantic Beach has a chocolate espresso cake that is to die for. It is even better when served on the deck next to the water. We are going to Atlantic Beach in September and can't wait to have it again!
