Mock wedding

Posted July 26, 2010

Have you ever been to a mock wedding? My daughter Lauren was the star of one recently. The real wedding happens in September. But her friends at Green Hope Elementary in Cary wanted to send her off in style with an outdoor ceremony at school. Lauren has worked there as a first grade teacher for three years. But since she's marrying a nomadic Navy man Lauren will be moving to Florida this fall.

Lauren's mock groom was one of her students. A parental assistant served as minister. Each student handed Lauren a handmade tissue paper flower, that when put together - created a beautiful, handmade and colorful bouquet. Also, Lauren said: “I think it's cute to add that my ‘something borrowed and something blue’ were loaned Silly Bandz from several students.” They're all the rage with young kids now. Parents pitched in to decorate the tables with flowers fresh from their garden. . The service included traditional music. And yes, a lot of people cried including my wife Cindy.

Here's how Lauren described the affair: "Since I can't invite all of my favorite first graders and their families to my real wedding, my fabulous assistant and many parent helpers threw a wedding we could ALL be a part of at school!"

So we already have lots of great wedding pictures and videos and the ceremony is still six weeks away.

A friend told me: "Now that's a wedding you can afford!"

My daughter gave my best friend one of her blue silly bands to wear on her wedding day when she realized she didn't have anything borrowed or blue. She wore it on her ankle!

Congratulations on your mock wedding and real wedding!

It’s so interesting how the silly bandz trend exploded like it did. We created Faith Bands—inspirational bandz based on Bible stories and biblical themes. We currently have 14 different sets of inspirational Faith Bands. We also have eight sets of general market bands (animal shapes, automobiles, etc.) because the demand is so great. We’re constantly adding more unique bandz designs to our already rare inventory.

We created these bandz as a way for people to share their faith. Swanson Christian Products—the company that created Faith Bands—has been in business for over 75 years as a Christian product wholesale distributor.

That's an adorable idea! I also remember teachers getting married and coming back after summer vacation with a new name! Sometimes the name changed more than once over a couple of years!! My 7th grade English teacher comes to mind . . .

Unfortunately I haven't even had a mock wedding! All those single guys over 50 out there don't know what they're missing!!!

What a thoughtful thing to do! I remember when my second grade teacher married over the summer break and came back with a new name. It shook my world! (It was a remarkably narrow world :-) I couldn't get over that teachers actually had real lives WITHOUT US!

That is such a sweet story!! Her students must really love her. I know you and Cindy are so proud of her. She is lovely and will be such a lovely bride on the "real" day!

Lauren is living with us until the wedding so it will be tough to let her go. Thanks for asking doglover. BTW, Rufus says "hello."
