Confusing towns

Posted June 30, 2010

We've traveled this confusing road before. Some North Carolina town names just don't add up. Beaufort is not in Beaufort County. Rockingham is certainly not in Rockingham County. Lenoir is a long drive from Lenoir County.  Washington is not situated in Washington County. Greenville comes close but it's still not in Greene County. Pittsboro is a couple of hours away from Pitt County. Cherokee is in the mountains but it's not in Cherokee County. Others include Davidson which isn't in the county by that name and Stokesdale which doesn't fall within the boundaries of Stokes County.

Some towns do match up with their counties quite well. Off the top of my head I have come up with a list of towns that sound like their counties. Please check this list and feel free to add to it.

Durham - Durham County
Franklinton - Franklin County
Hendersonville - Henderson County
Rutherfordton - Rutherford County
Lincolnton - Lincoln County
Wilkesboro - Wilkes County
Warrenton - Warren County
Halifax - Halifax County
Bladenboro - Bladen County
Ansonville - Anson County
Gastonia - Gaston
Yadkinville - Yadkin County

Which ones have I missed?

May not sound the same, but they kind of go together. Grover is in Cleveland County (Town named for president, county named for revolutionary war general).
