Favorite NC building

Posted June 2, 2010

What is your favorite building in North Carolina? What piece of architecture speaks to you in a special way?

Maybe it’s the gothic elegance of Duke Chapel or a glistening skyscraper in Uptown Charlotte. Feel free to throw in a lighthouse if you’d like: Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, Bodie Island, Currituck, Ocracoke and so on. The Biltmore House in Asheville will surely get some strong consideration. I’ve long been fascinated by the geometrical wonder of the State Fairgrounds known as Dorton Arena. I find grace in the stone of country churches and inns including Grove Park. From Manteo to Montreat and beyond there is a lot of interesting architecture across North Carolina.

Let’s get this discussion started and build on it!

the grounds and structure of Tryon Palace is magnificent. Bill, you and I picked up a news award at Grove Park Inn and I'll never forget how they loaded trees into the fireplaces and all the former presidents who stayed there. God bless you. Shu.

Gotta be Reynolds Coliseum on NC State campus. Every time I walk in I'm suddenly 21 all over again! I'm slim, my hair's dark brown, and there's a beautiful young lady with me. Then reality sets in.....

Mine is Wilbur's Barbecue in Goldsboro, for the simple fact that it is the home of Wilbur's Barbecue.
