Favorite road

Posted May 18, 2010

What is your favorite road or highway and why? I'd like to thank my good friends Brandon Boyd and Eddie Ellington at Boyd Honda in South Hill, Virginia for this idea.

I’d have to say the Blue Ridge Parkway is my all-time favorite. No other road in America can match its beauty. I also love Highway 181 from Morganton to Linville. It brings back great childhood memories along with glorious scenery. Highway 12 along the coast is another favorite. The Waterfall Byway in the western part of the state offers 98 miles of spectacular scenery. Black Mountain Rag near Asheville is another great ride.

What is your favorite road and why?

Another beautiful out-of-NC highway is the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper in the Canadian province of Alberta. Magnificent Rocky Mountain vistas, numerous waterfalls, the Athabasca Glacier on the Columbia Icefield, and lots of wildlife, completely unafraid, along the roadside -- big horn sheep, elk, moose, mountain goats, and the like. Not to be missed.

I would agree on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Hwy 181 but we like to leave the Parkway take Hwy 18 down from Laurel Springs to Wilkesboro. Someday I want to take U.S. 64 from end to end.

I am not sure of the road but it runs from Cherokee to Gatlinburg, TN- it is breathtaking to see. I love the road by Lake Lure and Chimney Rock also- I love anything in the country or mountains- riding is my favorite hobby next to camping.

My favorite road is actually not in North Carolina. My favorite road is HWY 16 going from Sheridan Wyoming to Yellowstone. It is absolutely beautiful out there, but I've only been there in the month of August. I bet it is also beautiful in the winter time when the mountains are snow-capped. Stunning.

Diverdown stole mine. The highway to Hanna on Maui is spectacular. I had to see it as soon as the rentacar company told us not to drive it!

Outside NC I would nominate Road to the Sun in Glacier National Park in Montana.

I think Highway 97 between Zebulon and Rocky Mount is a pleasant drive. There are what I call regionalist photographic moments (old barns, a school bus that is sawed in half and used for storage, rural housing, a few unusually shaped trees, a grain silo) along that road and it's a great alternative to Hwy 64. Oh, and you're in Franklin County for less than a minute's drive when going from Wake to Nash County.

the road to hanna is my favorite
