10 Oldest Towns Quiz

Posted April 23, 2010

Can you name the 10 oldest towns in North Carolina? Give it your best try. The blogger who comes closest to the official state list will win a prize.

Research historian Ansley Wegner of the N.C. Office of Archives and History actually put together two lists for us: The 10 Oldest Existing Towns and The 10 Oldest Towns overall including some that are now defunct.

We’ll get you started. Bath should be number one on your list. It is N.C.'s oldest town. However, the order of the remaining nine towns may surprise you and there will be controversy when the official lists are unveiled exclusively on this blog Monday morning. Stay tuned.

Now, congratulations to bettycu for winning the Nominate Your Neighbor contest. Also, congrats to MyKidRox for winning the Best Bumper Sticker Contest.

I don't know the answers, but I do know that way back then, the Orange County town mentioned several times was Hillsboro, not the present-day spelling of Hillsborough.

Is this "incorporated" towns or just named towns? Changes the list dramatically if using date incorporated.
