Famous Dates

Posted April 16, 2010

I’d like to go with LMRA’s great blog suggestion today. She brought this up while discussing Thursday’s topic about John Tesh dating Oprah.

Has anyone ever dated or turned down a date with someone before they were famous or infamous?

LMRA says that while in high school she turned down a date with Boomer (Norman) Esiason - the ex-NFL quarterback and now football analyst. Esiason was the quarterback at LMRA’s rival high school. As LMRA put it: “I guess I was being 'true to my school.' Look where that got me?????”

Former WRAL Morning Anchor Laurie Clowers recalls the time in Florida when Joe Namath asked her out for a date. She also declined. Something about those quarterbacks!

I look forward to hearing your stories.

OH and I was locked in a bar with the Atlanta Braves after their loss to the Phillies in the playoffs in 1993. It was last call but the hotel bar decided to 'lock down' and become a private party so the Braves could continue to drown their sorrows.

    Now THAT was fun!!!

    YES! Spill it momtobe!!

In my youth (ok I was in my 30's) I had season tickets to the Philadelphia Phillies. I also had several female friends who were into baseball too so they would join me at the games and then we'd go out afterwards. Most times, we would just 'happen' to run into the Phillies or the visiting team.

One night my favorite Phillie came up to me and asked if he could sit next to me. It was John Kruk - currently an analyst on ESPNs baseball coverage. OMG! To this day, I have the empty bottle from the beer he bought me.

I would love to tell my story, but just think that the time is not right..not my story but my daughter's. Not one soul that reads this would believe it, so for now I will keep it under cover and that is no fair...why did I even bother to write..

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who went out with Matthew Broderick.

    Well, no dates.
Went to high school with Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top but I didn't know him.
I was also on a Student Union programming committe and met quite a few people through that. Truman Capote, Madeline Murry O'Hare, Butterfly McQueen, Timothy Leary, Jane Fonda, Jose Feliciano, Harry Anderson (of Night Court), Arlo Guthrie, Harry Chapin. Probably more, but my brain is dulled by allergy medication ;-)
My all time favorite though was in the earlier days of the Internet ... I sent Susan Stamberg of National Public Radio an email ... probably was one of her first. Ten minutes later my phone rings (we'd always put our phone numbers on our "signature" files back in those days)
"Hi, Tom, this is Susan Stamberg of National Public Radio." We had a nice long chat.
Oh, and I've become pretty chatty via blog with Bill Leslie.
