Promise of Spring by Bill Leslie

Signs of spring

Are you tired of winter? I bet you are. Yesterday on Facebook I posted a comment on the 67th anniversary of the cardinal becoming the official state bird. Someone commented the sight of a cardinal in the snow reminded him that spring was right around the corner.

What are your favorite signs of spring in North Carolina. Maybe they're the daffodils, peonies or hummingbirds. Where do you like to go to celebrate the warmer weather? What's your favorite garden?

Cousin Jack Dellinger operates a historic gristmill in the mountains near Bakersville.  Jack reports robins around the mill this week - a sure sign that warmer weather is on the way.

Spring is such a refreshing renewal. Spring brings a new hope of what is to come.

When we have to "spring forward" our clocks by 1 hour for daylight savings time. I vote to discontinue this unnecessary tradition.

The beautiful 'pink' trees blooming all around Cary!

Seeing robins in my backyard and watching the smaller birds fight over who will nest in my bluebird house.

Watching the Maple trees in the woods along the highway turn red just before they bloom. Daffodills blooming. I have buds ready to go at the moment.

If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? the answer is one of two - either Pilgrims(lol)or June bugs!!!lol Yeah come on SPRING!!!

I know Spring is close when I get home and all the kids in my neighborhood are outside riding their bicycles and playing ball. When I walk outside and say "Wow it's too warm for a sweatshirt" or "I need to break out my lighter clothes!" My 4-legged kids like to stay out longer in the evenings - they don't need to run in the house and cuddle up with me!

AND my favorite sign of Spring - it isn't dark when I get home from work!!!!

Bluebirds & Robins looking for the worms in our newly tilled garden - my husband could not wait to get into the dirt. Also the buds on the trees & the daffodils sprouting.

Daffodils(buttercups in our neck of the woods),flowering quince, yellowbells(forsythia),blue birds, the hickory tree at the end of our house with buds(they are usually the last to get leaves),birds of all kinds singing, the dreaded wild onions in the yard(lol), and seeing the first butterflies!!! You know it really is spring when you hear a whippoorwill call too!!!

Believe it or not, hearing the roar of lawnmowers and the resulting smell of cut grass. Also the blooming of dogwood trees and the yellow/green buds beginning to show on trees.
