Your Favorite Salads

Posted March 3, 2010

Spring is right around the corner. Fresh fruits and vegetables will be on the table before you know it. Today's question deals with salads.

What is your all-time favorite salad? What restaurant offers the finest salads?

I thought of this question after visiting 18 Seaboard in Raleigh last weekend. This splendid restaurant had the finest salad I could recall: grilled asparagus with cranberries, sweet potatoes, bacon, bleu cheese and green peppercorn puree.

Elizabeth Gardner's favorite restaurant salad is Annie Get Your Goat Salad at Hayes Barton Grill in Raleigh. I love the name!

My father made a great salad. I salivate just thinking about his famous family Bibb Lettuce Salad. He grew the lettuce in the family garden. He would wash and dry the leaves with tender loving care and top them with freshly chopped tomatoes and a simply delicious oil and vinegar dressing.

What's your favorite salad?

Hands down, it's the Cajun Chicken Salad with balsamic vinegarette dressing at Tripps (Wade Ave).

Bill you may or may not have had one of these, but in Sedona Arizona there is a restaurant called the Red Planet Diner. They had a salad called the Solar Salad that had red and green leaf lettuce, walnuts, gorgonzola cheese and an unbelievable house vinagrette. I try to copy this often at home and come pretty close sometimes.

Carolina Coffee Shop in Chapel Hill has my favorite salad- the grilled blackened chicken salad. It has blackened chicken strips over mixed greens with roasted red peppers, goat cheese, pecans, and raisins. Tossed in a raspberry vinaigrette...amazing!

Breadman's, in Chapel Hill, has a wonderful chef salad. Very fresh and huge! I get it with their homemade blue cheese dressing on the side. I also love cobb salads.

Love the Pear/Gorgonzola salad at 518 West and the Black and Blue salad from Winston's Grill with strawberries, blueberries, blue cheese crumbles and the best raspberry vinegarette dsg.

Two favorites, but very different: Jane Russell Perfect Pear Salad at Hayes Barton Grill, yum!
As for Chicken Salad, you can't beat Bob's Barbeque in Creedmoor, it's the best!

The tossed green salad at Carabba's with parmesan dressing is SO GOOD! When it's served, it's chilled and crispy.
