Best Sledding

A major snowfall looks likely this weekend. If it happens, the best advice is to stay home and have fun. Where is the best place to go sledding in your neighborhood? Please share your recommendations.

When I was a kid growing up in Morganton we had several favorite places. I recall waxing up the blades of my Flexible Flyer and heading to a huge hill behind North Anderson Street. During the summer, neighborhood children groomed the trail by clearing brush and marking off the trail with limbs.

Later in high school there was a huge hill behind the First Baptist Church. I remember spending a weekend with friends flying down that big hill with little or no fear. Gosh, we had a great time!

Growing up in Apex when it was a lot less growth we used to go out to the cow pasture and sled down the hills behind my grandparents out out on TenTen. Now that we have moved to Eastern Chatham County the kids slide down the hills in our yard and pasture.

In east Cary, turn off Chatham on to Urban. Great hill that flattens out, low-traffic neighborhood.

Not a Hill, but a Street. Grant Ave. It runs parallel to Wade Ave. and is just as steep, but no cars. Well, except for the parked ones on the side. If there is enough snow and ice that keeps people off the road, WATCH OUT!!!

Most of the Raleigh commenters talk about inside the beltline locations (except for the Sawmill commenter) so I feel I need to step in with some North Raleigh wisdom. Two great places were Rampart St., and Shelley Rd. between North Hills Dr. and Mine Creek at the bottom of the hill. Walking back up took quite a while but was worth it! And if you wanted a suicide run, run across Millbrook Rd. and go sledding down the Shelley Lake dam...

My church had a huge hill that ended with a little creek. If you managed to sled between two trees that had an exposed root, you could miss the creek. of course, the root sent you flying into the air, but it was lots of fun. Many kids managed to get wet as well as cold in this spot.

Broadway, NC. Cow pasture beside Darrell Buchanan and the McNeill(s). Car hood stood on its side at the top of the hill all year. One year a 8-10 inch snow came and then freezing rain on top of the snow. We could get about 5-6 people on that car hood at a time. Moon shining down on the hillside was enough to where we could sled well into the night.

Growing up in Durham 20 years ago: Willowhaven Golf Course; Hole 15 tee box. Not only was the sledding great, so was the party.

Oh and, another note: when I was younger, i'd run and jump on the sled...... tried it last time it snowed....it hurts now!

I grew up at "The Falls", which is no longer "in the country", Fonville Rd. has a great hill that runs to the Neuse river bridge. Back in the 'good ole days' we would see who could go the furthest across the bridge. Of course, now, you'll get run over by all the cars crossing the bridge.....snow or not! Those were the best memories ever!!!!!
