People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Halloween Favorites

What was your favorite Halloween candy as a kid and what was your favorite costume? Please share.

I loved dressing up as Wild Bill Hickok with my cap pistol and cowboy hat. Neighbors who handed out Peanut M & M’s were held in the very highest of esteem.

What about you? I’ll send a Halloween book to the person with the best story.

Oops, I forgot to mention my favorite candy. It was those miniature Krackle bars that came in the Hershey's variety pack.

It was the late 70's and I was dressed as a Stormtrooper from Star Wars for our Kindergarten class party. I was excited, and thought for sure everyone would think I had the coolest outfit. When I got to class, most of the kids picked on me and kept asking why I didn't have a laser gun. My mom, who had brought brownies to the party, saved the day by saying I had left my "blaster rifle" at home, and she was going back to pick it up.

Of course I didn't actually have one, but that didn't matter, all was well. Thanks mom!

My favorite halloween candy as a kid was milky ways and reeses cups. My favorite costume as a kid was the year I went as the Cookie Monster. My mom made it out of blue furry material from the fabric store with 2 big styrofoam rounds with glued on giggly plastic eyes. The mouth is where I looked out. To this day, I still enjoy dressing up at Halloween!

My favorite candy to recieve was when we would take our kids around, Mrs Ruth McLaurin would make homeade fudge and send it out to the car for the parents.

I bet I also had the strangest. Way back when you could trick or treet anywhere (40 yrs ago?) we were at Kure Beach visiting my grandparents who were fishing for the month. One man gave us bait shrimp to take with us because he forgot it was Halloween and didn't have any candy.

My dad, being the great father that he was, had a rule that he would check all our candy before we ate any. If he found anything suspicious he would take care of it. I found it strange that every year all the Mary Janes were deemed suspicious. What a great dad!

My favorite costume was one my father made for me when I was about 11. I was the shortest child in my class so he took a pillow and taped it to a broomstick, covered that with a sheet and I was a 6 foot ghost when holding up the broomstick. I could answer "no" by turning the broomstick back and forth. The unfortunate thing was not being able to carry a bag for candy because I needed both hands to hold up the broomstick but what fun it was to have no one realize it was me.

My favorite candy was Wax Nips (the juice in the wax bottle)

There was one year that no one got to go trick or treating. I was 3 and my parents had taken me, my sister, and my 2 month old brother to our grandparents so that grandma could babysit little Bobby while dad and mom took me, my sister , and his younger sisters and brother trick or treating. Grandma was pregnant and due any day. While watching Gunsmoke, Grandma went into labor and Dad took her to the hospital to have my Aunt Sandra ( a Halloween baby). No body got to go trick or treating because Dad had the only car. My grandfather always called Sandra Hagan after Festus because she came during Gunsmoke. And yes, Halloween is her favorite holiday.

The most unusual costume I ever wore was wearing a mask of Paul Stanley of KISS while wearing a dracula cape. I was inspired by "KISS meets the Phantom of the Park" and I recalled there was a scene in which the members of KISS were wearing capes. My favorite candy at Halloween were tootsie rolls and candy bars such as Snickers and Milky Way.

Since I always wanted to be one a cowgirl, I guess my favorite costume was the year I dressed like a cowgirl. My favorite candy or treat was the homemade popcornballs that one of my mom's friends would make every year. Of course, that was back in the day when homemade treats were safe to give.

I pretty much liked it all ... except those candies in the black and orange waxed paper. I don't think I even ever tried it ... just didn't look appealing to me.

My favorite costume was not for trick or treating, but for giving out the candy. I built my own full-sized coffin out of plywood, put up a sheet across the garage and set up a backlight for a very eerie effect. My mom told kids to knock on the coffin and I lifted the lid and flashed fangs and gave them their candy. Scared a lot of kids with that. I was twelve.
