Falling Spirits?

Do the falling leaves of autumn send your spirits tumbling as well? Doctors call this Seasonal Affective Disorder. I have talked with numerous people who complain about getting the blues when winter approaches. Personally, I embrace fall like the return of a dear old friend. I love it. Autumn is my favorite season. What about you?

North Carolina’s mountain valleys are still vibrant with autumnal colors but the hues are beginning to fade. I traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway Sunday from near Roaring Gap down to US 421 just outside Boone Sunday. What a treat! I’ve attached several of the photographs I took along the way and from Saturday at Cumberland Know. Special thanks to my patient wife, Cindy, for putting up with all of my stopping, staring and starting again.

Thank you for submitting your favorite fall color photographs over the last few weeks. We still have some fine foliage to follow around here in the coming couple of weeks.

Drum roll, please. Our judges were “blown away” by the quality of titles for Monday’s mountain mist photograph. Thank you for participating. After excruciating deliberations our panel has declared NCCaniac the winner for the title “Celestial Fire.” Will the winner please contact me at bleslie@wral.com so we can arrange a suitable prize? Thank you.

Thanks for sharing the splendors of fall. You have your fathers eye for capturing the beauty of the moment. Fall is among my Top 4 reasons why.. I like calling North Carolina home. can you guess the other 3? btw...with WRAZ/Fox carrying MLB playoffs you know its the officially autumn in the good old USA!

Hi Billy Gus!, Your pictures are fantastic!! Thanks so much, we have not gotten to go yet!! Hope to take a drive up this weekend!! Thank you, Doodlebug...

I have to agree with riverracer8. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons, too. There is nothing like being outside on a chilly day and then coming into the warm house for a cup of hot chocolate. The fall colors are so beautiful and there is beauty all around in winter if you just look for it.

Sorry to put a damper on this thread but between Thanksgiving and my birthday (March 23rd) I am emotional mess. For me, it's the anticipation of 'having to be happy' at Thanksgiving, the family pressures of Christmas and the aloneness I feel at New Year's and Valentine's Day.

I don't like that it gets dark so early. I don't like that baseball season is over. For me, there are no redeeming qualities of winter. It's just a sad time of year for me.

I guess I'll be the curmudgeon...I dislike fall and hate winter. I despise when daylight savings time ends. I dread the onset of cold weather. On the positive side, I look forward to the winter solstice so that I know that the days are slowly getting longer.

Bill,

I am honored that the judges selected my suggestion. I'll send you that e-mail. Beautiful pictures you have been sharing!

I love EVERY season! I especially love this time of year though..... Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year. I love the feel of it.

My favorite season is summer, as I'm a big beach fan, however I do enjoy all seasons! The beautiful fall colors and crisp air, and the chilly January days are great for being inside or out, in North Carolina, and the freshness of spring and the beautiful flowers and mild temps are all great pleasures!

I think fall is lovely - the sights and smells. I do have a hard time though with the seasonal thing. Sometimes is worse than others. Sometimes I wish it would could go from August and jump to March or April. I am a beach girl, so summer, with its heat and humidity, is my favorite time. Of course anytime in NC at the beach is the best!!! :) Thanks for the pics Bill! They are beautiful!!! The colors here in Johnston county are changing now too! Downtown Benson, with the trees along the main street, are showing off like showgirls! The colors are wonderful! Have a great day! :)

your pics are great! thanks ope for sharing! I love autumn, but summer is my favorite season. don't care for rainy. foggy days four in a row but can tolerate a few. :)
