Wedding bells

Posted September 28, 2009

It's looking more and more like a mid September wedding in our family. My daughter Lauren and her fiance Luke stopped by over the weekend to talk about their big plans.

We went over a tentative guest list, talked about flowers, cakes, photography and a rehearsal dinner. Then, Lauren surprised me when she asked: "Dad, do you think you could ask the people on your blog to recommend a nice site for our wedding reception?" I answered: "Sure, I don't have a blog topic for Monday so why not?"

It surprises me that people of all ages and interests read this blog and a lot of useful information is exchanged. So, if you don't mind, let me ask the following question:

Where's a great place in the Triangle to hold a wedding reception?

(And next question: how much is it going to cost?)

Fearrington House is ideal. We had our wedding and reception there. You can have an outdoor event, with indoor backup as Plan B. Their food is outstanding, including the cake.

Bill, not sure how big the reception will be but we had our's at Second Empire and it was great. Excellent food and service. I've also heard that renting the Natural Science Museum is a good place for receptions if you have a larger crowd.

We got married in October 2001 and had our reception at Artspace in downtown Raliegh, catered by The Square Rabbit. We were able to bring in our own alcohol which saved us a good bit of money and the rental for Artspace was extremely reasonable. For us, it was the perfect place. The Square Rabbit did an amazing job with the food and our cake!

Gosh, these are all great ideas! Thank you very much! I think my favorite is Charlie Gaddy's house!

Bill, I had two sons to get married last year. One reception was in Raleigh at The Elks Club with 42nd St. Oyster Bar doing a fabulous job with the catering, and the other wedding & reception was at Rose Hill Farm in Nashville, NC.

The Carolina Inn is always a hit. My daughter is getting married in June 2010 and we are hosting their event at Barclay Villa in Angier, NC. It is a truly beautiful place and their staff has been so helpful and easy to work with.

The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in downtown Raleigh has a wonderful reception hall in the new Parish Life Center. Contact the church at 831-2000. The person you need to talk to is Darylene Netzer.
