Beautiful Rainy Day

Posted August 31, 2009

It’s a beautiful rainy day. I just stepped out the back door at WRAL TV and drifted down into the gardens here off Western Boulevard into the gray and emerald green hues of the morning. The weather is cool and the air seems fresh and full of life. As I made my way to a breakfast spot I started thinking about my favorite rainy places.

Glencoe in northern Scotland is much more beautiful in the rain than in the sun. And yet the chamber of commerce crowd still likes to put up on-line pictures of Glencoe under bright blue skies. Glencoe remains one of my all-time favorite destinations even though its history is marked with horrific stories of tragedy.

As for North Carolina I personally like Blowing Rock better in the rain. There’s something soul-stirring about the cool mountain air laden with mist. Golfers may disagree but I also like Pinehurst in the rain as long as I have a good book and a warm cup of coffee. And give me a screened-in porch and a fat newspaper on a rainy day and you’ve got one happy camper.

Smashing Magazine has captured some wonderful images of beauty in the rain. Check out these photographic marvels:

What about you? What was your favorite rainy day? What place is better in the rain than the sun? Please share.

Nothing beats Smokemont Campground right outside Cherokee on a rainy day. Rain brings out the green in the moss that covers the rocks in the Smokies. And Cades Cove. Ditto.

I think wide open fields are great during rainfall, particularly just before it gets dark. I got a chance to see that Friday evening after eating dinner downtown. I also have enjoyed walking the streets of Beacon Hill in Boston in the rain with gas lamps and cobblestone streets giving a certain charm to that neighborhood.

I was certainly in the mood to stay under my nice warm quilt with my good book when I woke up today. No better place to be!

I love being at the beach in the rain & curling up on the covered deck or balcony with a good book & listening to the rain & the ocean.

I walk early every morning and love days like today when I can walk in the drizzling rain. The sounds of a rainy morning seem different from the sounds of a sunny day and rainy mornings are calming.

Also I love being at the beach on a rainy day. That is why rocking chairs and books were invented.

These all sound terrific! I agree about Roan Mountain. It's truly one of the great rain places. Lake Stetson sounds delightful.

I love the Pennslyvania Amish Country during a light rain. The rain seems to add character to the simplicity of the surroundings.

We have a cabin in Maine-- on Lake Stetson--- it's beautiful to be there in the rain and look out on the lake and see the loons... LOVE IT.

My favorite rainy day used to be snuggled under a comforter on the couch with my kids watching vhs tapes and eating pop corn. As I have aged and the kids are grown I am more likely to be walking the beach or hiking a mountain trail in a light rain. Especially that time in Florida at Treasure Island with my new husband :). A really hard rain or thunderstorm, then stay in bed and enjoy some quality time with my mate.
