Weekend Wanderer

Posted August 21, 2009

Welcome to the second edition of The Weekend Wanderer here on the Carolina Conversations blog. We use this forum to offer up fresh entertainment ideas for the weekend ahead. I mention some of the things I plan to do and invite you to do likewise.

I’m really looking forward to dinner tonight at Fins Restaurant in Raleigh. I hear the Sea Bass is outstanding. Tomorrow I’ll sample some of the unique crafts at Lazy Daze in Cary. If you are looking for unique and quality gifts Lazy Daze is a goldmine.

My hiking recommendation for the weekend is the nearly six mile Company Mill Trail in William Umstead State Park off I-40 in Cary. Take the Reedy Creek Entrance.

If time allows I’d like to visit Silk Hope Winery in Chatham County. I was close to the winery last weekend when I visited Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church for a luncheon.

So, what are you doing this weekend? Please share your ideas.

Doing chores around the house on Saturday & then going to Nags Head on Sunday - a must to see the waves from Bill - & to eat some seafood at Captain George's buffet. I have been tasting those snow crab legs all week!!!! We will probably also go by Fort Raleigh to pick up some stuff I need to teach a unit on the Lost Colony. We may do alittle more shopping while down there also.

Saturday is the 50th anniversary of the 50-210 Fire Department at McGee's Crossroads in Johnston County. The fun starts at 2:00pm with the sounding of the siren which was used to call firefighters when the department was first established, followed by a parade starting at Church Road on Hwy 50 going toward Hwy 210 and turning left onto Hwy 210 and thru the McGee's school complex and ending at the fire department. The fun continues with an opening ceremony at approximately 3:30, games and activities for the children, food vendors and a car show. The Hickory Grove Quartet and the Grasscats Bluegrass Band will perform and fireworks will end the celebration at 9:15. Come out and support and thank this wonderful fire department. My 21 year old son is a volunteer with the department.

Bill- Sea bass is a seafood you should never buy or order in a restaurant due to overfishing. Learn all you can and become an informed consumer by reading about Seafood Watch ( If you enjoy seafood, please help raise awareness about the dangers of overfishing.

Saturday is a must trip to the Cape Lookout area to check out the high surf from Hurricane Bill, looking and listening, not surfing! Saturday night, a 90th birthday party for my cousin Ray at the Goose Creek Island Community Center in the city of Hobucken. Don't blink while driving through, you will miss it. Sunday is a "comfort" day. Playing it by ear. Everyone have a fantastic Carolina Wandering no matter where you go or what you do when you get there.

The only thing I have planned right now is taking a tour of the new Johnston Memorial Hospital facility in Clayton. Can't wait to see what it looks like inside. My primary care physician is moving there later this Fall and I thought I'd take a peek.

Other than that, it's television at it's finest: Yankees/Red Sox baseball and one of the most exciting NASCAR races - Bristol (under the lights too!!)
