3 Things You Didn't Know

Posted August 13, 2009

Today we will start a new series called Three Things You Didn't Know.  We will profile three people in the public eye and disclose three things you probably didn't know about them.

We'll pick on three of my morning colleagues this week: Renee Chou, Mike Moss and Brian Shrader. Renee and Mike are filling in this week for Kelcey Carlson and Elizabeth Gardner on WRAL's Morning News.

Please let me know three more people you would like to know more about and I will get their answers. In addition, feel free to offer up three unusual things about yourself.

Renee and Brian have something in common. Both were so smart they skipped kindergarten. Here are some other nuggets:

Three Things You Didn't Know about WRAL's Brian Shrader

1. Southerner who never ate grits until this year.

2. A board game geek.

3. Writes songs, plays the piano and has his own music publishing license.

Three Things You Didn't Know about WRAL's Renee Chou

1. High school student body president with campaign slogan" "Chou up the competition!"

2. Taught Chinese dance in high school and college.

3. Outstanding tennis player.

Three Things You Didn't Know about WRAL's Mike Moss

1. Played center for Northern Nash High School's football team and was nicknamed "Moose.".

2. Plays guitar and likes folk music.

3. Served as photographer for Penn State University student newspaper.

I would like to hear about Charlie Gaddy. How is he keeping busy since his retirement?

Mike - very funny story re: your nickname.

A CENTER?? Oh my!!! How did you manage to get that position AND how did you get those really big guys off you when you ended up at the bottom of the pile??

  • Mike Moss Aug 13, 2009

LMRA, That nickname always throws people! Although I was later a football player (a center at that), and was a little beefier in those days, it actually started in 6th grade when a teacher misread my name when she was handing back homework - she called out "Mike Moose," and it stuck all the way through high school.

I also thought of one other odd tidbit from way back. In summer after my 8th and 9th grade years, I played baseball in a league in Rocky Mount, for the WRAL-TV team, little knowing I'd work here many years down the road! As I recall we were a really awful team the first year, and then a really good one the next...

Please tell us about Tom Suiter, Cullen Browder and Debra Morgan. Also is Monica's kitchen as clean as the restaurants?

  • Celt Aug 13, 2009

    Kelcey, Elizabeth, and yourself!

  • Kathleen Aug 13, 2009

Please include David Crabtree and Pam Saulsby, as well as yourself! Thanks.

  • LMRA Aug 13, 2009

OH my choices would be The Crabber, Mike Maze and Monica!! Especially their growing up years. Any unusual hobbies we would never expect???

As for me . . . there isn't much unusual. Being a female, people find it interesting that I know a lot about sports - especially baseball. Players, stats, old timers, and I know how to keep score.

On another note - I can't imagine Mike Moss playing football AND having that nickname!!!

I would like to know little known facts about Greg Fishel & Mark Holiday. I know that he is not officially on the air any mote but I would like to know something I didn't know about him.

The WRAL family seems to have one thing in common with each other....their involvement of the arts either in music or dance.
Do Elizabeth and Kelcey have any talents we are not aware of? Does Elizabeth sit around the campfire playing her guitar and singing a ballad? :)
