People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Monday Musings & Mascots

It’s back to the broadcasting saddle after a weekend at Grandfather Mountain for the Highland Games at MacRae Meadows. We had a wonderful run of games, music, dancing and fun. My co-anchor Kelcey Carlson finished second in her age division in the Grandfather Mountain Marathon. Congratulations to Kelcey and the 400 or so other runners who finished the grueling 26 mile course.

I enjoyed seeing Voice of the Blue Devils Bob Harris and his family including wife Phyllis along with former Duke basketball coach Bucky Waters. The Harris family has an interesting hobby. They collect autographed photos of world leaders. They even have one of Fidel Castro. They collect their signatures and photographs in pairs so they can share them with their grandchildren. Bob, by the way, is coming out with a book this fall. It was great seeing Bucky again. He is such a colorful guy and great storyteller.

Before I forget we have a winner in the Crazy Mascot contest. Congratulations to wballanceunc for mentioning the Fighting Okra of Delta State University in Mississippi. If wballanceunc will send me his or her address I will be glad to ship off a CD.

What would you like to talk about this week? Toss me an idea and we’ll get it started.

I wish we could spend some time talking about places that use to be in the Raleigh area that are gone. I know it is a common topic, but there are so many new folks to the area that might not know about some of those places. The topic came up last week about the Village Underground at Cameron Village, with the Pier and Frog and Nightgown. Amazing talent came through in the late 70's-early 80's, but most folks don't even know it existed.

Hey great news about my submission for the mascot. Thanks to all that voted. Bill, I sent you a message with my address via the Contact Us form from the main page. Let me know if I need to send another way. Glad to hear you had a great time at the Highland Games. My mom and sister were there and had a blast.

Let's one day talk about the new places to go in downtown raleigh new restaurants, etc. I know there is a new cupcake shop that is wonderful downtown!! Sugarland on Franklin street in chapel Hill has wonderful tiramisu cupcakes too!! changing the subject but Julians on Franklin street has the prettiest men's ties I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mostly carolina ones of course!!

Good idea, Hockeyrules! Edwards Grocery, Darryl's, Crazy Zack's and several other fun spots hold a dear place in my memory.
