People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Mascot madness

Meteorologist Mike Moss came up with a great Carolina Conversations blog idea this week – unusual school mascot names. Mike remembers playing high school football against the Eastman Kodaks of Halifax County. Mike said the players had camera logos on the sides of their helmets. What a hoot! Eastman High was lost in the move toward consolidation but an Eastman Middle School remains in Halifax County. They’ve gotten away from the camera theme. They’re now the Eastman Kodiaks. Gosh, that’s funny!

What was your school mascot? Feel free to include high school and college. What’s the most unusual mascot you’ve heard? I’ll offer a CD prize to the person sending in the most unusual mascot name.

We were simply the Wildcats back in Morganton.   Kelcey Carlson's mom attended Shadeland High School in Indiana.  Shadeland was home of the Peppers.

In college I went to Carolina and for those living outside this state The Tar Heels might seem like an unusual name. Of course the actual UNC mascot is a ram. I remember getting into a good-natured argument with a Georgetown fan at the 1982 NCAA Basketball Championship game in New Orleans over the meaning of a Hoya!

There are many humorous names. You may have heard of the Abington Galloping Ghosts in Pennsylvania. What are some others? Let’s have some fun with this.

I always thought that Transylvania Univ in Lexington KY should have been the Vampires instead of the Pioneers.

In HS I was a Bulldog, then a NC State Wolfpacker. The worst mascot I've ever heard of is Teutopolis, Illinois - the Wooden Shoes. One of the coolest college mascots is SD State - the Jackrabbits - Sic 'em Bunnies!

Teutopolis' arch rival is the Efingham Flaming Hearts.

Graduated from Erwin High School - the Redskins! It was replaced by the Triton Hawks - consolated the three high schools in the area. Dunn was the Greenwaves - funny we are about 120 miles from the ocean! Coats was the Yellow Jackets and I think the elementary school still is. They have gotten away from some of the names like that. But the elementary school my sons and granddaughter attended was the Meadow Indians. I really love the Carolina Mudcats name! And I am a huge Atlanta Braves fan! Love em even if the NEVER win the World Series! :)

I lived for about a year in Mt Vernon TX (home of Dandy Don Meredith) ... Mount Vernon was the Tigers; seemed to me like most of the schools around there were the Tigers. The Tigers would quite often be playing the Tigers and two weeks later they'd be playing the Tigers.

We were the Henderson High School Bulldogs!! OUr team was as mean as Bulldogs too!! ha Of course the UNC ram is my favorite to see at the football games!! Have a Happy and safe Fourth!! Great firework show in Wake Forest at the Wake Roseville High School on the 3rd!!

I went to Jamesville High School and we were the Bullets. However, I think the minor league team that Manny Ramierz was playing with briefly have an unusual mascot . . . they are the Albuquerque Isotopes.

I was destined to have a feline mascot throughout my schooling.

High School - Cougars Mars Hill College Lions Western Carolina Univ - Catamounts

I went to East Wake High School and we were known as the Warriors and then moved to South Johnston High School and was known as the Trojans.

I attended the University of Louisiana which we all know is in Lafayette, LA. We are the Ragin Cajuns with a flaming pepper as our logo. Our first mascot as ULL (pronounced ooh-la-la) was similar to the Demon Deacon of Wake Forest, named "Mr Cajun" but the alumni prevailed and the mascot was changed back to the original mascot, the bulldog. His name is Ragin.

The craziest mascot I've ever seen is "Hillie" the red towel of Western Kentucky. The first time I saw at I thought he was a hill, since the team name is the Hilltoppers.

My wife grew up in Columbia,Missouri and went to Hickman High School. Their mascot is the Kewpie doll and they are called the Hickman Kewpies. There is a story behind it but I can't remember the whole thing now.

I was a Viking in high school and a Bishop in college

I like the Toledo Mud Hens, except when they beat the Durham Bulls!!! Strange Name, the Mud Hens.

I was a Wildcat in high school and a Brave in College at UNCP (Pembroke State University)

I once saw a bumper sticker promoting the "Fighting Okra." I thought it was a joke, but later learned that the Okra are the mascot of Delta State University in Mississippi! I'm a Warrior from high school, and am loyal to the Wolfpack from college years...........pretty well-known mascots around here.

There is a minor league baseball team in Georgia called the Savannah Sand Gnats.

I went to high school in Virginia, and we were the Churchland Truckers. Our mascot was actually a semi-truck!

Macon used to have a hockey team called the Macon Whoopee. No joke....

darylfoot - I remember that! I loved that nickname! Always thought it would cool to get a t-shirt with the team name and logo!

I attended Broughton High School in Raleigh, which has the nickname of "Caps" - short for Capitals (why not?) I then attended Johnson C Smith University which has the nickname of "Golden Bulls" - which is the same nickname that my dad's high school in Fayeteville (E. E. Smith) has (funny isn't it?)
