Beautiful Mountains

Posted May 25, 2009

Timing is everything in the mountains. The rhododendron, mountain laurel and flame azaleas were all in bloom over the weekend. I'm glad I packed my camera. I've left a few images for you.

Cindy and I drove up to our cabin in Alleghany County Friday. The weather was perfect. Saturday we traveled north on the Blue Ridge Parkway into Virginia. It's a beautiful drive up to Chateau Morrisette, a popular winery and restaurant just north of Mabry Mill. The crab cake salad was awesome.

We drove back to Glade Valley and then down Highway 21 to Stone Mountain State Park for a hearty hike on Wolf Rock Trail. I resisted the temptation for ice cream at the general store near the park and settled on a diet soda after the hike. We drove on into Elkin and had an excellent dinner at Village Bar-B-Que.

Early mornings in the mountains highlight the beauty of misty ridges. I love the layered look near Roaring Gap.

How was your weekend? Please share.

Hey Bill. We took a trip to the southern mtns this weekend - my first trip there ever. It was nice (and somewhat rainy) and we enjoyed the scenery, some fishing, and a lovely outdoor wedding (it did not rain at all during the wedding or reception.) BUT, I must admit, I'm definitely a high-country girl at heart and I still think the high country is the most beautiful part of our mtns in NC.

My husband and I also were in Alleghany Co. at our small christmas tree farm. We have our camper in Ennice. It was beautiful as always.

Took my high school jr to Boone to check out ASU. She'll be an art major. What a place for her!

Thanks, Emma! I'm always on the look-out for a pretty view.
And I appreciate the steak house alert, mdoodle. I will put Middleburg on my To Do List!

It was a pretty quiet weekend. Saw "Angels & Demons" on Saturday morning at North Hills. A fun movie, but the book is much better. For dinner, we took the beautiful drive up to Middleburg, North Carolina to eat at the Middleburg Steak House. We learned of this wonderful restaurant several years ago on Channel 4's North Carolina Weekend. Bob Garner reviewed and recommended the place. We've been going up several times a year ever since. The steaks are excellent and the prices are reasonable. Best of all, everyone there is so nice. A nice little roadtrip with a great meal at the end!!! And Bill, you are a great photographer. I love "going on your trips" through your pictures!

    Bill & Cindy,
I believe you could find beauty in the most unlikely place. I love your descriptions and suggestions.
