People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

February's finest

February will never win a popularity contest in North Carolina. The frosty month has been called Febru-weary. It is short but not so sweet for many people. But there are some things that I love to do in February.

I am going to list my top five things to do in February and invite others to submit ideas. Bloggers who participate will be eligible to win a copy of my book Blue Ridge Reunion published by 2D Designs last fall.

Here is my February Top Five

1. ACC basketball really heats up this month.
2. Hiking in the snowy solitude of western NC.
3. Finding a large stone hearth with a good book and a roaring fire.
4. Walking on a deserted beach.
5. Perusing pottery places.

NC Chocolate Festival this weekend in Morehead City!(Feb 7-8) Excuse to get out the house, do a "roadtrip" with my bestfriend and her beau, get to see the OCEAN, eat some seafood(YUMO), and the best reason - CHOCOLATE!!! lol ;)

February is when I usually take my daughter and one or two of her friends to the beach. They don't care that they cant go in the water so long as they can play in the sand. And I don't have to deal with the summer crowds.

Well, I find that I can take some from Bill and some from Fishnett to fill in my list. 1)curling up in my favorite chair by the fireplace with a good book 2)good weekend afternoon naps on the couch in front of the fire 3)little road trips to the deserted coast -- especially Wrightsville Beach and the Oceanic Restaurant for their awesome She Crab Soup 4)hopefully playing in the snow if we can get another good snowfall!!! 5)gotta agree with Bill on the ACC hoops -- just wish the Wolfpack was playing better!!

Bill,

I have to agree with your first four choices. I would switch #5 to be Hiking in Umstead State Park, since I am not much of a shopper.

I love the fireplace/good book idea. I also enjoy visiting the mountains in February, going to Lake Mattamuskeet to watch the swans, watching ACC basketball, and trying new recipes.

1.Curled up with a good book 2.staying in a cozy mountain cabin while praying for snow!! 3.long walks on a deserted beach(cedar island) 4.Taking a "me" day just to relax, preferably a rainy one so i can eat, sleep and watch a good movie. 5. Throwing a big birthday party for my daughter and father who both have february birthdays.

1. Top of the list, hands down--Valentine's Day! Trying to make the day as magical for my sweetheart as she has made the last 29 years for me.

2. Hiking the Eno.

3. Watching Duke/Carolina.

4. Finally finishing "The Eye of the World"

5. Mastering the bodhran.

1. Taking orders for Girl Scout Cookies. 2. Picking up Girl Scout Cookies from the warehouse. 3. Distributing Girl Scout Cookies to our Troop. 4. Delivering Girl Scout Cookies to friends, family, co-workers. 5. Submitting paperwork for Girl Scout Cookies.

1. Preparing my Federal and State Tax returns. 2. Valentine Day trip to Raleigh to see my children & grandchildren. 3. Chances of Snow and no longer having to go to work in it. 4. Enjoying the quiet and beauty of a winter day on Lake Gaston. 5. The gas logs on, a good cup of coffee, and a Nicholas Sparks novel.

The best and only thing to do in February is to WATCH SOME CAROLINA BASKETBALL! GO HEELS!
