People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Best cold weather restaurant

What restaurant serves the best food when the weather turns bitterly cold? Maybe it's a meatball dish, spinach lasagne, thick and hearty soup in a bread bowl, hot shot chili or parmesan potatoes. Whatever it is, please share your suggestions.

Elizabeth Gardner says she loves the chicken 'n dumplings at Big Ed's in Raleigh on a blustery day. Valonda Calloway craves the broccoli and cheese soup at Panera. I love just about any of the hearty Italian dishes at Amedeos in Raleigh when wintry winds are howling.

What about you? What North Carolina restaurant smooths over those January goose bumps? With this week's arctic blast we could all use some toasty and tasty options.

Mama Dips in Chapel Hill is a favorite too and I love the onion soup at Panera!!

Cracke r Barrel is good for a chain restaurant.

I used to love Mountain Jack's prime rib chili in a sour dough bowl. Too bad they went out of business.

I agree with the stay in crowd. I'm lucky because my husband is a great cook. He makes all kinds of wonderful soups in the winter...this week it was a delicious & spicy pot of chili. If I'm going to go out, I opt for a restaurant with great wine. There's nothing like a glass of good red wine to warm you up...my favorite spot for that? The Red Room on Glenwood South.

CHINA PALACE Egg Drop Soup take out. Drop in a couple handfuls cooked white rice and sme crunchy noodles from there. Dash of hot sauce. My bowl is about a full quart. It makes the short drive from this part of Durham to Chapel Hill and hime tough, 'cause it smells so good.

I remember a very cold day back in the mid 1990's. A group of friends and I went to Shoney's. I had a bowl of corn chowder. Now, Shoney's isn't exactly popular for their corn chowder- I never knew they made it. Best it was one of the best bowls of soup I have ever had in my life. It was warm, it was hearty- I loved it! Of course now-a-days, there isn't a Shoney's right down the street. And chinese Won Ton soup usually does the trick to warm me.

Home made chili, spaghetti or beef stew at home. I like to cook. A nice glass of merlot tops it off as well!

My wife's Homemade Chili or Homemade Vegetable Soup with her special made grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of Coffee at home is my Ideal Meal on a cold day.

Mimi's is a chain owned by the same company as Bob Evans. They both have good soups and "stick to your bones" type of meals. I've only eaten there once, but the new Noodles and Company in Cameron Village was good for soup (tomato basil) and various pasta/noodle combinations.

As for locally owned places, I like Fayetville Street Tavern because it is close to me and open late. Mecca and Big Ed's are good but have early closing times. Bella Monica at Edwards Mill and Duraleigh doesn't have much in the way of soup but everything else warms me up on the inside.

The blog post asks "What North Carolina restaurant smooths over those January goose bumps?" It is amazing that people here take the Sara Palin route -- just ignore the question entirely and make up your own.

Stay at home - with a large pot of homemade vegetable beef soup.

Wendy's Chili is the best!! No cooking required at home, no messy dishes to clean up. The best part it tastes great! Low fat, high fiber. I'm making myself hungry just thinking about it.

If you want the best hamburger in the world...Go to Ward's Grill in Whiteville, NC. It is a little hole in the wall that has been in business for more than 40 years. Go early-They close at 2:30PM every day. Sometimes sooner when they sell out of hamburgers. Order them: Cheeseburgers "all the way" (Mustard, onions, chili). They're mouth-watering gooood!!

Mama Dips-anything warm!

Home eating chili is best for my family....but give us a good snowstorm and we are out cooking hotdogs over a bonfire and drinking hot chocolate..

Staying home and making potato soup is the best!!!!!!!!! But if you have to go out or can't cook, Sweet Tomatoes has great chicken noodle soup - HUGE pieces of chicken and big fat noodles. GREAT!!!!!!

Interesting that so many people responded positively for eating at home. I like going to restaurants, but when I first read the question my first thought was, I prefer staying in if is bitter cold outside.

I love to make hamburger soup. Second best is good ole mac and cheese casserole!!! By the fire of course!!

We prefer to stay home and eat homemade chili. Always do that while watching the Super Bowl, too. Southern Living a couple of months ago had a great chili recipe using ground turkey. It is good even if cholesterol isn't an issue. It also has some beer but chicken broth will substitute if you want to. I feel some in my future this week-end.

The Corn Chowder at Mimi's is the best. I had it for lunch yesterday!

My favorite cold weather home dish would be a burger casserole recipe I learned as a child. It's hamburger w/ a mixture of cream cheese, mustard and horseradish sauce in it. Yum! The Jan Pong from the China Express in the RTP is awesome too!

I had some good Brunswick stew that my dad made and put in the freezer for lunch yesterday. Felt roasty toasty for the whole day after that

Our favorite is a big pot of homemade chili with a big slice of homemade cornbread....hummm. Nothing warms the bones than a good ole bowl of homemade chili.

Can't believe no one has mentioned C. Barrel. (golo wouldn't let me use the word!!) Sit close to the fire and enjoy a plate of Chicken Fried Steak with vegetables/corn bread and sweet tea! YUM!

lseltmann: Can you share the entire recipe??? That sounds yummy. I love horseradish -- think that must add a great kick to the caserole.

All of these mentions of chili...you need to try the chili at Sunset Grille in Durham. This has won the award "best chili in Durham" for like 3 years! It's excellent!

I love the brocolli and cheese from Quizno's it's so good with a roast beef sammie. L-O-V-E it.

mdoodle, the recipe is a 1lb of hamburger divided in 1/2. Place first 1/2 in baking dish making a well for mixture. Mixture is 1 8oz packet of cream cheese or for lighter recipe 1/2 c. plain yogurt. 2 tblsp mustard and 1-2 tblsp of horseradish to taste. Cover with remaining hamburger and cook for 45 mins -1hr 350.

Thanks, lseltmann!!!!

I would have to say Wilbur's BBQ in Goldsboro. Nothing like a hot plate of Eastern NC BBQ. For starters do not forget the hushpuppies and a warm bowl of thier BBQ chicken gravy to dip them in. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!! I'm going to eat!!! See Ya there!!!

To eat out - Meadow Village on Wednesday - chicken and pastry! YUMMMY! To eat at home - big ole pot of homemade veggie beef soup with grilled cheese! Even nicer if it would SNOW!!!lol ;)

Is there anywhere in the Raleigh area where one can find the old fashioned chicken and dumplings- not the pastry type you find a lot down east- but the fluffy ones. That was always good comfort food on a cold day and for Sunday lunch too.
