People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Best cold weather restaurant

What restaurant serves the best food when the weather turns bitterly cold? Maybe it's a meatball dish, spinach lasagne, thick and hearty soup in a bread bowl, hot shot chili or parmesan potatoes. Whatever it is, please share your suggestions.

Elizabeth Gardner says she loves the chicken 'n dumplings at Big Ed's in Raleigh on a blustery day. Valonda Calloway craves the broccoli and cheese soup at Panera. I love just about any of the hearty Italian dishes at Amedeos in Raleigh when wintry winds are howling.

What about you? What North Carolina restaurant smooths over those January goose bumps? With this week's arctic blast we could all use some toasty and tasty options.

I, too, love the broc & cheese at Panera Bread; but when its cold like this, I prefer to stay home & make a pot of chili, pizza soup or New England Clam Chowder.

The clam chowder at Sam & Omie's in Nags Head is sooooo good, especially when it's cold and windy outside.

I like just about any good quality Chinese hot and sour soup on a cold day (especially if I am under the weather), but for the ultimate in Asian soups, go to China Express on Hwy 54 on the fringe of RTP and try the Jan Pong. Better tell them to tone down the spice for city folks. You won't find this with the soups, it is on the back of the menu under "Handmade Chinese Noodles" and all of the items under that section are good. When I worked in RTP we would go to this place and notice big tables of Asians all eating soup out of big bowls. I asked what they were eating, tried it myself, and never went back to the lunch special again.

I agree with tangerine. I prefer to stay home & make a big pot of homemade chicken noodle soup or vegetable soup & cuddle up with the dogs!!

Back in 2000, after the blizzard, my then fiance and I had not been able to go out together for at least a week. On our first night out we went to Hard Times Cafe on Glenwood South for chili. But I agree with earlier bloggers that it's just nice to stay inside. I've talked about the great Paula Deen recipe for Taco Soup here before. It just so happens that I had a big supply in the freezer. It's going to taste so good for supper on Thursday and Friday!!!

I agree with the home-made stuff when I have time; but if I have to go out to get it Hard Times on Glenwood South has good chili; whether you prefer it Texas style, Red, Cincinnati style, or vegetarian. Village Deli at Cameron Village also has good chili. Mimi's Cafe (newer restaurant in front of BJ's in North Raleigh)has good French Onion soup, as well as corn chowder when it is the daily special. And, if I can get to Pam's Farmhouse for lunch, any of the daily specials are great.

You just can't beat the Open Kettle in Roxboro...comfort food at its finest! The meatloaf, fried chicken, hamburger steak, REAL mashed potatoes with gravy, home cooked vegetables and mile-high meringues on chocolate and lemon pies that melt in your mouth are among the chill-busters on the menu.

And I'm not the least big prejudiced because it's owned by my cousin, but the family time is always my favorite thing! I especially recommend their breakfast (available every day) especially on Saturday mornings!

Come see them at the intersection of U.S. 158 and 49 South...

Homemade chili or ckn noodle soup or if I want to go out then it has to be Panera!!! Love that soup.

Ahhhh---I would pick Tir na n'Og on Blount Street. The Donegal-style boxty, a pint, and some great music with friends makes the cold winter evening fly by! Slainte!

I made a huge pot of chicken veg soup last Saturday and it was so good!! Tabasco Sauce, 1/2 stick of butter,Tomato soup, and Ketchup are the secret ingredients!!!!!!! yummy!!
