If you were a band member in school what instrument did you play and what drew you to that instrument? Also, what are your favorite band memories? Please share your thoughts on these questions.
As you think about these things let's talk about one of the premiere band events in the Southeast. Cary Band Day kicks off with a huge parade November 1st emceed by legendary WRAL news anchor Charlie Gaddy. The field of bands participating in this colorful celebration of music is larger than ever. More than 35 bands will compete for prizes in the 50th edition of Cary Band Day.
Publicist Stan Hill says other highlights include the East Carolina University Marching Band. The Marching Pirates will perform in exhibition during the field show portion of Cary Band Day.
Also, The Cary High Marching Band will perform in exhibition during the field show portion of their show "Traditions" which is a tribute to past and present marching bands complete with wardrobe changes from yesteryear to present day.
What instrument did I play? Well, I started with the cornet in the fifth grade, transitioned to baritone and finished up with the tuba in middle school. Yes, Greg Fishel and I do have something in common!

I played sousaphone and tuba in high school in Virginia between 1965 and 1969. I guess you could say that tuba chose me, rather than me choosing it. My high school band director told me that I did not have the ombichure for playing a trumpet/cornet or french horn and I tried trombone, but was destined to play tuba. After high school, I only played it my freshman year in college as part of a pep band but haven't touched it since.
My musical passion now is playing acoustic guitar for which I have been attending sessions offered through the Town of Cary at the Page-Walker Hotel on Tuesday evenings.

My four years of high school were great because of being in the band. I loved marching. I loved going to the football games. The best memory is the feeling you have just as you finish marching the program, and you know it was a good show. I love that feeling of everything going just right.

I'd never would have thought I'd be living in Cary decades later but here I am. I absolutely loved going to the competitions. Although the competitions aren't very far from where I live, I have yet to go to one here and I've lived in Cary since '92.
It's sad I know, but I'm always busy with my business trying to gear up for the holiday season so I never have the time to go which hurts because I could watch competitions like the professional DCI or the Broadway show "BLAST" (the artistic band performance on stage) for days on end.
Those memories are among the best and fondest that I've ever had.

My son started with the flute in 6th grade but switched to baritone sax this year when he entered 9th grade at Person High.

I played trumpet indoors and was in the colorguard outdoors. I really enjoyed the travel and all the friends. Of course I liked practice, too, so I am not sure what that says about me!
