People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Fragrance Fracas

I remember the first time I dabbed on cologne. It was the seventh grade in Morganton. Tommy Williams had a dance party at his house. “Johnny Angel" by Shelley Fabares was playing on the turn table. Perfect for slow dancing. “Here, try some English Leather,” Tommy said. “The girls love it.” I walked into the bathroom and moistened my fingers with the sweet smelling potion and applied it to the back of my neck. During the next dance the girl I was trying to impress said: “Nice scent. But did you have to take a bath in it?”

Ever since then I’ve tried to be careful about cologne. I even consulted the Man’s Official Guide to Cologne which states: “When you apply cologne, do not apply more than one or two fingers' worth. This is the normal amount if you simply dab cologne on your body. Alternatively, you can even use a spray bottle to apply your cologne. In this case, a single squirt of the bottle is more than enough.”

Today I rarely use cologne out of respect for people with allergies. I’ve noticed that more and more Fragrant Free Zones are popping in places such as churches, restaurants and stores. Allergies aside, it can be quite irritating when you shake a hand and have to carry that person’s overpowering fragrance with you the rest of the day.

I am sure you could smell the following questions at least a mile way:

What is the perfect name for a North Carolina fragrance? Bodie Island, perhaps?

What are the best and worst smelling colognes of all-time?

What is your opinion of fragrance free zones?

If you don't like these questions please hold your nose and answer any way. Thank you.

I am all for Fragrance Free Zones if they also incorporate them to be a Body-Odor Free Zone. If not, well then let me have my cologne! The worst fragrence to me is Estee, but it could be that my sister used it heavily in her teen years.

NC Frangrence: "Cardinal Breeze" or "Dogwood" Best and worst: Best was my favorite as a child. Loves' Baby Soft. It had such a sweet and innocent fragrence. Worst kind was Charlie. OMGoodness- Charlie would make me gag. I do also have a soft spot for Old Spice as that is what my dad wears. Today I wear Cashmire Mist by Donna Karen. Very feminine scent. Frangrance Free Zone: Haven't heard of that.... it seems to make since.

I would LOVE to have fragrance free zones as I am very allergic to many scents. They trigger migraine headaches for me. I used to love a scent called Jungle Gardenia, but fear that it would make me violently ill today!!! I like the suggestions from MaplesMom for an NC Fragrance called "Cardinal Breeze."

I am in favor of fragrance free zones. Unfortunately, some people don't understand the words in moderation. I have to be very careful who I hug or shake hands with in places like church. I know most people aren't aware that some of us have problems with strong smells. I still love Polo on my hubby. It reminds me of our first dates! Good subject to blog about, imo.

Most of my associations with colognes are related to people, and that tends to drive my perception of them. I cannot stand the smell of CK One since I dated a jerk once who wore it. On the other hand, I love Chrome, probably because my husband wears it now.

We also associate a very distinct fragrance with my husband's late grandfather--a combination of Brut and diesel fuel. As horrible as that sounds, when we talk about it we always get smiles on our faces at the memory. He was a very hands on, do everything yourself kind of person, and that combination of smells was the very essence of who he was.

I think the smell of pluffmud (sometimes called "fluffmud" in the sounds and marshes of North Carolina is a divine fragrance. Maybe I lived there in another life! My mother wore Elizabeth Arden's Blue Grass flower mist, which I love to this day, and the absolute worst of all time is Blue Waltz. I used to smell it on folks when I was a child, and it is still around, so SOMEBODY likes it! The first boy I ever dated wore Old Spice and I still like it today. Freshly-dug peanuts also have a heavenly fragrance, and freshly-turned earth in the spring. Enjoyed seeing you the other day. Have a great Labor Day Weekend.

I think we should have two fragrances: Beach Sky and Mountain Sky. Beach Sky would be light and airy and a summer splash-on and Mountain Sky would be a heavier fragrance, with an underlying freshness. I like Old Spice and Polo (am I telling my age?) for men and I wear Amirage.

I think my favorite would be Eastern style BBQ sauce. Love that smell. A little behind each ear. Oops! Wrong blog subject. I have to say that I don't really know the names of any of them. I just know the people who wear them and which one's to avoid. I like whatever it is that my wife wears but I don't know it's name. One of my clients' wife works in the business and she smokes (which I consider her business). Between her perfume and the cigarette smoke smell, I feel like going home and taking a bath and burning my clothes after I work in her office. And I'm not sure which one is worse or if it just the sickly sweet combined with the stale smoke. I still shave with a regular razor and have used nothing but Old Spice After Shave (cologne's too strong) for almost 40 years. Soothes the skin but not too much fragance. Still get the ocassional "Umm, you smell nice!". My dad used Noxema Skin cream to shave with. Remember the smell when I was little and he would snuggle me up close.

p.s. I have to add that I love it when my hubby wears his Drakkor Noir. The scent is maculine and heavenly. A scent that reminds me of my father is wood. Driving down 64 to Charlotte there is a wood mill. You can smell it coming and going. Blistful fragerance....

I still have a bottle of Shalimar by Guerlain. we wore that in high school. I am wearing Daisy by Marc Jacobs now. Whenever I wear it men and women ask me what I have on. Bright Crystal by Versace is nice too. I only have a sample but would love to get some.Channel No 5 is the worst and Coco comes in for second worse by channel
